For awhile, I lived in Miami Lakes and there weren't any places where my dogs could romp near my house. So on the weekends I'd take them to a field behind a complex of office buildings.

Back then, Miami Lakes wasn't like the rest of Miami -- it had zoning cows. Here and there on plots of undeveloped land you'd see a cowfield.  It kept taxes lower because the land was zoned for agricultural use. Anyway, there was a cowfield next to the field where my dogs ran.

One day, my dogs took off chasing a bird and ended up in the middle of the cowfield surrounded by cows. The first dog did what she always did when she was scared. She rolled over on her back, wagged her tail and peed. She did this in the middle of a cowpie. The second dog stood very still ... in the middle of a mound of fire ants.

I'm a city girl, so I'm not real comfortable around cows. For about 10 minutes I stood outside the fence calling to them frantically. But it soon became apparent that although both were prettey distressed, neither was budging. So, in the end I hopped the fence and scooped up the dogs.  One covered in pee and cow dung. The other squirming with fire ants. This wasn't very easy because they both weighed about 15 pounds and there were a lot of confused cows sniffing us.

I lugged them back to the car, grabbed a couple of gallons of water kept on hand for easy post field clean up and washed them up as best I could. By this point, dog number two had been bitten by ants so many times that she started to vomit. I decided that the dogs would ride the mile home in the trunk.

That was the last time we went to the empty lot. And it was probably the only time I wished I didn't have a dog. Any other interesting stories out there?
